Increase Access to Behavioral Health Care

September 2, 2020

Reform is needed in both insurer and Medi-Cal behavioral health delivery in California. This bill introduced by Scot Wiener tackles the former. Improving access to behavioral health care for people who are insured could reduce the number of families and individuals who face a horrific choice between bankrupting themselves to pay out of pocket for mental health or substance use treatment denied by insurers or letting the conditions go untreated. In either case a spiral of struggle is often set into motion that can result in these individuals and families moving onto Medi-Cal. This bill could improve access to critical behavioral health services.
